Our Director of Music

Sunny Mays

As a child spending summers with his father, a Baptist preacher, it was church as usual, but church with his grandmother throughout the year was anything but. Picture this, Sunny’s grandmother attended a white congregation, which was uncommon in the seventies for an African American. Sunny developed his love of diversity during these formative years and it remains a driving force today. As the eighty’s approached, Sunny vividly recalls being dunked in the frigid waters of a horse trough baptismal at a tent revival one brisk fall evening in 1979. Sunny received the gift of salvation that night and his passion for Christ has never ceased. His love of music was born the same year and became a catalyst for the worshipper that Sunny would come to be.

In 1999, Sunny married Antoinette and in 2002, after doctors said having a child was impossible, miraculously a beautiful baby girl named Taylor was born. "God is Good!" In 2007, being divinely led to join Faith Chapel in Birmingham, Sunny and his family relocated from Little Rock, Arkansas to Hoover, Alabama where they still reside. Contact Sunny

Shawndee and her family have been members of Cross Creek Church since almost the beginning. Her husband, Jason, also serves as a Deacon. Their four children are very involved in Hoover City Schools, with sports and dance, and keeping the entire family very busy with all their activities. As a family, they love to go to the lake, travel, camping, and hiking. They also love to be with their extended family and take trips to the beach or to the mountains. One interesting fact about Jason and Shawndee: in the first 6 months of marriage they lived on an RV and traveled to almost all 50 states with a ministry called First Priority! It was quite an adventurous beginning to their lives as a couple! Contact Shawndee

Gracie Groves

Gracie grew up in Charlotte, NC and came to Birmingham in 2015 to pursue Nursing school at Samford University. During college she had the opportunity to spend a summer in Yellowstone National Park with “A Christian Ministry in the National Parks” flipping burgers and telling coworkers about Jesus, little did she know that the Lord was using this experience to shape her and train her for ministry work! After graduating from Samford in May of 2019, Gracie is now working as a nurse at Children’s of Alabama in the Special Care Unit (step down from ICU). When she isn’t at work or with the youth group, Gracie is likely outside biking, rock climbing or drinking a cup of coffee with a good book in hand! Contact Gracie
